Mandatory uniforms cost parents money year after year, with particularly high costs for students in Auckland and Wellington.
For one mum, the cost is too much.
Amanda Lee Coker joins The AM Show to discuss the high price of school uniforms in New Zealand.
So far this year, she’s forked out $150 for a skirt, top, socks and shoes for her daughter.
“To me you’re paying for the logo,” she says. “Uniforms don’t have to be so expensive.”
It’s a nightmare.
“Why have a green and tartan skirt when you could have a plain green skirt?” she asks Duncan Garner. “That would cost half the price to make.”
