Auckland teacher shortage 'worst in 30 years'
Auckland's primary teacher shortage has hit a new record low.
The latest Education Gazette shows there are at least 287 open spots for primary and intermediate teachers in Auckland.
Te Hihi School Principal and Auckland Primary Principals' Association President Kevin Bush says it’s the worst it’s been in 30 years.
“I think that there’s other jobs out there that pay more and they’re attracting people out of teaching.”
"The minister will say it’s increased 17 percent over the last eight years of National government, but in reality we need something like 30 percent increase to bring it back to the 1979 level."
