The importance of a healthy gut
Gut health is one of those really important things that a lot of Kiwis seem to push to the side.
Vanessa Vujcich from Good Health NZ joined Trudi Nelson on Saturday Fresh, calling the gut the "second brain" as it's linked to mood and many health concerns.
Sugar can be one of the gut's worst enemies, Vanessa said "the bad bugs and all the bad stuff thrive off [sugar], they love it, and then it throws all the good stuff off balance".
Fermented foods such as yoghurt, kimchi and sauerkraut are hugely beneficial for the good bacteria in the gut, whereas sugary foods and yeasty foods such as bread and alcohol should be avoided.
