Tips for Bell's Palsy

As promised on the show here are the types of exercises which help Bell's palsy patients to regain the use of their facial muscles.

1. Try to round the lips
2. Smile as often as you can
3. Alternate the smile by rounding the lips and then say "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
4. Open the mouth as wide as you can and then round the lips as if you were kissing.
5. Practice throwing a kiss.
6. Close the lips tightly as if you were saying " MMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm"
7. Say Mama, Mama as fast as you can.
8. Say "MEME ME ME ME ME"
9. Close lips tightly as you puff up your cheeks with air. Hold the air inside the cheeks for 5 seconds and then release.
10. Try running your tongue around your teeth in both directions.

These exercises are contained in a piece about Bell's Palsy in my book Phone People Book V111, a book which is still available by calling 0800 459 459. The cost is $24 post paid.

Hi my name is Jess i'm 24yrs old - Under 3 years ago I got bells palsy. And now i think i'm having a relapse. Although it doesn't look as bad as the 1st time i got it, it is alot more painful. All i seem to be getting though is: "Oh you look ok" but thats not my point - I'm in pain! All people can see is a little swelling in my left side of my face. What do I do? Is this still bells palsy? My doctors are stumped.

I was interested in reading your tips for Bells Palsy sufferers. I was affected when I was only 5 years old, in about 1940. At that time, there was no treatment, and although the muscles on the right side of my face were affected, they pretty much recovered except that my right eye drooped. This had a significant negative influence on my self-esteem
over the years until, after 3 surgeries, I finally have a healthy eye that is fairly normal-looking, and one which will now almost close.
