Why is New Zealand's obesity rate rising?

Why do you think obesity in New Zealand is on the increase?

Current figures suggest that 27.7 percent of men are obese, the figure is 27.8 percent for women. The 2009 rates were 17 and 20.6 percent respectively.

For Maori, the figures stand at 40.7 percent for men and 48.1 percent for men.

Why have we seen these increases? What can we do to stop these stats?

new zealand was once famous for their athletes.now they dont even encourage physical education in school.and mr ronald mcdonald has not helped much.the PC club that has ruled this country for the last two decades can take the rest of the blame.we have lost all control of our kids, and when a country goes to war with her children, the future is bleak..

because people are getting lazier. They find it easier to blame their health on everything else, rather than getting off their butts, walking to the store to get ingredients and actually cooking a meal, and it doesnt take that long to do thats just another cop out. people need to take more responsibility for their own well being.

It is cheaper to give your children high sugar cordial and fizzy than milk, white bread is up to 4 times cheaper than brown/wholegrain, high quality low fat meat is more expensive than low quality high fat meat and the list goes on. We are now starting to grow a good number of our veges at home, eat free range eggs and free range, or home kill meat. At 70 plus after first thinking my sister and I were mad my parents have now changed their eating/buying habits to free range and organic...mostly due to taste and quality...but it isnt cheap!!!

Sendintary jobs, busy lives, convenience food, lack of knowledge about what is contained in packaged food and how much energy it is providing. Advertising also can suggest a product is healthy when in fact not. Serving sizes have increased. Every looked at a meal and imagined all that sitting in your stomach! Your shouldn't have to loosen you belt everytime you sit down to eat.
End of the day, exercise regularly and reduce your portion sizes

Why is NZs obesity rate rising? If current figures suggest that 27.7 percent of men are obese and the figure is 27.8 percent for women then there is a problem. It is quite obvious that both sexes do not know how to control their dieting and in other words exercise mor often. That is the only way of getting rid of fat.

Junk food and fizzy drinks (full of sugar) are so cheap., while fruit, veges, bread and milk are so expensive. Education is the key!
