One of the few winners in this year's budget, outside of spending on education and health, was the increased focus on science and innovation which included a $60million National Science Challenge to answer questions of national significance and the creation of what is to be known as the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI). While the announcement of additional funding is finally recognition of some of the issues people like the late Sir Paul Callaghan have been advocating for years regarding the need to further strengthen NZ’s scientific research capability, will it be enough to retain our top talent, who, increasingly, are leaving for jobs overseas? In this interview Massey University Vice-Chancellor and former Labour cabinet minister Steve Maharey along with Andy Hamilton, CEO at Auckland based business incubator The Icehouse discuss both the merits and shortcomings of the government's latest strategy to encourage science and innovation.
