Wendyl Wants to Know: Country Chicken Soup Mix

Opinion 10/07/2017

King Traditional Soup Mix. Country Chicken. $2.90 for 210g.

I will list the ingredients under two headings: Good Foods (in my opinion) and Additives, so that you can clearly see what is going on. And I will also give the food a star rating out of five.

Good Foods:

Dehydrated vegetables and grains (85%)[split peas, pearl barley, lentils, peas, carrots, onion], dehydrated chicken (2.5%)[contains egg], maize cornflour, onion powder, yeast extract, black pepper, garlic powder, salt.

Flavour (contains wheat egg), sugar, hydrolysed vegetable protein (contains soy), maltodextrin, flavour enhancers (627,631,621), anticaking agent (551).

Under the Good Foods heading are foods you would use if making a chicken vegetable soup at home, except you would probably use fresh vegetables and chicken. The additives in here are flavour – as there is no mention of natural 7 flavouring, I am going to take this as artificial in my opinion. I would not use sugar in a soup, nor would I use hydrolysed vegetable protein, also known as HVP. This is created when maize and soy are boiled in hydrochloric acid and broken down with sodium hydroxide to release the protein. It is used in foods as a flavour enhancer and also as a filler. Maltodextrin is a white powder made from a starch which is cooked, then acids or enzymes are added to break it down. The result is a white powder which is water-soluble and has a neutral taste. It can be used as a thickener, a filler and a preservative in processed foods.

And then there is the MSG (621) along with sodium inosinate (627), which is prepared from meat or fish, and disodium guanylate (631), which is commercially prepared from yeast extract or sardines and enhances flavours, reducing the amount of salt needed.

Plus the anticaking agent silicon dioxide (551).

My recommendations:

If you don’t have a reaction to MSG then the fact that 85% of this soup mix is vegetable and grains means the few additives in it won’t bother you too much.

But if you are intolerant to MSG then you need to look elsewhere. You can buy split peas, lentils and barley on their own and simply add them to some chicken stock and some veges to make a soup.

Try this: Ceres Organic Country Soup Mix – ingredients are just barley, lentils and split peas.
