New Zealand’s tourism industry continues to surge but local infrastructure and communities are feeling the strain.

Economist Shamubeel Eaqub told Weekend Life on Sunday that areas like Queenstown are under unique pressure.

"In places like Queenstown, they've got real problems. A quarter of the housing stock there is now listed on Airbnb."

Shamubeel says building infrastructure to support growing numbers of tourists is particularly difficult considering the base of ratepayers remains comparatively small compared to the number of people seeking to use facilities.

Queenstown has been a victim of its own success.

”It's still an extraordinary place to visit but it's getting very crowded and becoming quite hostile for its workers and citizens."

Shamubeel also gave Trudi the latest on oil prices, whether we’ll see some relief at the pump and mortgage rates.
