Winter may be on its way out, but it’s not stopping us from attempting to kick our unhealthy habits to the curb.

Dr Frances Pitsilis joined RadioLIVE’s Weekend Life to share some tips for staying healthy for those busy Kiwis out there.

One of her top tips? Vitamin D supplements. The Auckland-based doctor has been battling a cold herself, but says she cut it in half by taking large doses of vitamin D.

Dr Pitsilis recommends visiting your GP to get prescription-strength tablets of vitamin D, which boasts five times the amount than in an over-the-counter bottle. While not all GPs are aware of this tip, she says the high dose of vitamin D is suitable for up to seven days while in the thick of a common cold.

According to the doctor, the average person will see improved sleep, mental clarity, and energy levels with sufficient vitamin D.

She also advises that Kiwis “take stock” of their life and make sure they are focusing on doing activities that really matter.

“Are you really spending your efforts on the most important things?” she asked.

Never underestimate the power of vitamin D.

A work-life balance is crucial when prioritising activities. Try yoga, meditation, or listening to music as easy activities for the mind and body.

“We have a lot of difficulty stopping, being still and being with ourselves,” she told RadioLIVE.

Her final tip? A good night’s sleep, particularly for women.

Dr Pitsilis emphasises that women should be aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep, which can become increasingly difficult with age.
