On the eve of the Dry July fundraiser, participants across the country are gearing up to go booze-free for 31 days.
Richie Hardcore, a social influencer and personal trainer who supports the cause, told RadioLIVE that Dry July is a great way for people to learn about and scale back their drinking habits.
Though Mr Hardcore has never been a heavy drinker, he opted to go completely alcohol free about 10 years ago after seeing the drug’s harmful effects exacerbated as his friends grew older.
“I grew up in West Auckland where binge drinking was the norm,” he told Weekend Life’s Carly Flynn.
Dry July can be exciting, explained Mr Hardcore, especially for those who want to use it to help manage their drinking habits.
“You’re going to look at what you do for stress and find better ways of doing it.”

Participants may find they are better motivated to do healthy activities, and may even save some money by completing the challenge.
This year’s Dry July’s proceeds go to a charity called Look Good Feel Better, which provides free, community-based programmes for any person facing any cancer at any stage of their diagnosis.
“So it’s not just about the not drinking; it’s about helping other people,” Mr Hardcore emphasised.
