Immigration Minister proven himself to be ‘totally incompetent’ - Garner

The AM Show 01/11/2018

The AM Show host Duncan Garner called for immigration minister Iain Lees-Galloway to resign for granting residency to a Czech drug-smuggler without knowing crucial information about the case.

Karel Sroubek came to New Zealand in 2003 on a false passport, and told officials that he had to flee his country after witnessing a murder.

He is currently behind bars for smuggling almost $400,000 of drugs into the country and was refused parole in September.

Garner said Lees-Galloway should "offer his resignation" over the case.

"He's proven himself to be totally incompetent, absolutely useless over the case of the crook, Czech national, Karel Sroubek."

Yesterday Lees-Galloway told Parliament he'd seen contradicting information and was seeking urgent advice over the residency.

It is suspected this information is that Sroubek had in fact returned to the Czech Republic after 2003, when he first immigrated to New Zealand, reported by Newstalk ZB on Wednesday.

This contradicts Sroubek's claims that he would be killed if he ever were to return.

Garner said "that information would have been easily available, but Lees-Galloway didn't ask enough questions in my view, and his officials cut corners".

"It's Lees-Galloway who wears the big-boy pants here, he gets the big salary and ultimately he made this decision."

There have also been reports that Sroubek's ex-wife, who had previously supported his residency, is now going back on that, and is taking out a restraining order against him.

"How can we have confidence in Lees-Galloway when the next case hits his desk, and the next case?

"Stamp 'Deport' for Sroubek and 'Depart' for yourself, sir."
