Keeping kids safe on the farm over the summer holidays

Rural Exchange 16/12/2018

This week a harsh reminder was served that accidents can happen at any time, any place.

A four-year-old girl died after an incident involving a scrum machine at Manurewa Rugby Club.

With children at a loose end during the summer holidays, it's important to make sure all on-farm risks are taken care of.

Worksafe New Zealand's Al McCone says the biggest risks for children are vehicles, bodies of water, large animals and chemicals.

"As much as we sometimes want them to be, kids are not little adults," he told RadioLIVE's Rural Exchange.

"Until they're 15 or 16, they simply haven't developed a full ability to perceive the risks around them."
