Canterbury water project to carry on after Govt pulls funding

Rural Exchange 11/08/2018

Farmer shareholders are pressing on with a Canturbury water project despite the Government cancelling its funding.

The Hurunui Water Project confirmed it would carry on with developing the irrigation scheme after a meeting with share applicants on Tuesday.

Hurunui Water Project CEO Chris Pile admits that the loss of Government support was a blow, but says there is still "fantastic support" from a core group of farmers and shareholders.

In April, Finance Minister Grant Robertson announced the Government would stop funding the Hurunui, Hunter Downs and Flaxbourne projects through Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd.

Mr Pile joins Rural Exchange to discuss the effect a scaled-down project will have on the community and the environmental management of the plan.
