Reducing the environmental impact of winter grazing

Positive environmental outcomes require good environmental practice.

Farmers are already doing some great work in the environmental space, but there is still much to be done.

Managing winter grazing so it has minimal impact on waterways is an area that can be addressed with some forward planning and simple management tweaks. 

South Island Environment Capability Manager for Beef + Lamb NZ, Matt Harcombe says sediment and phosphorus loss can be reduced by up to 90 percent with simple grazing management.

"They're pretty self-explanatory when you start to think about it," Mr Harcombe says.

Winter grazing has high stock numbers in a confined area and is a relatively intensive land use and could lead to increases in surface runoff which can carry increased loads of sediment, nutrients and micro-organisms.

Beef + Lamb NZ says it is essential to consider how to reduce nutrient and contaminant losses to streams and waterways as well as minimising damage to soils and paddocks.
