New rules around the supply, storage, use and disposal of some agriculture and horticulture chemicals came in to effect at the start of December last year.
However some farmers are still unaware that this affects many chemicals used on the farm.
Howard Clarke from Advance Agriculture joined Rural Exchange to explain the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.
Some of the significant changes include:
- Mandatory inventory of hazardous substances and their safety data sheets.
- Minimising the number of chemicals stored for a lengthy period of time; quantities above certain amounts may trigger additional compliance requirements.
Mr Clarke says fewer substances require a certified handler, with the focus on having more farmers qualified to handle them.
