Cabinet chaos in UK as Brexit reality bites

Morning Talk 10/07/2018

The United Kingdom's Brexit strategy has claimed another victim, with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigning.

Mr Johnson's resignation comes just hours after Brexit Secretary David Davis announced his resignation and just moments before UK Prime Minister Theresa May began addressing the parliament about her new Brexit plans.

An international relations expert says Brexit is “the politics of delusion.”

Professor Robert Patman told RadioLIVE’s Mark Sainsbury that leaving is never easy, especially when your mandate is razor thin.

“Britain is seeking to extricate itself, essentially on its own terms, from a group of 27 other liberal democracies and if you choose to leave an organisation, you can’t dictate the terms in which you leave,” he said.

Some are speculating Mr Johnson is angling toward a leadership challenge.

Professor Patman says not only is the cabinet divided over Brexit, but the whole country is.

“There was only a wafer-thin majority that voted for Brexit - now there is increasing questions about the legitimacy of the referendum,” he told RadioLIVE.

Meanwhile, a statement from Downing Street said a new Foreign Secretary to replace Mr Johnson would be appointed shortly.
