Wendyl Wants to Know by Wendyl Nissen.
Stock cubes have been given a bad name mainly because some of them were highly salted and didn’t contain much in the way of natural ingredients. So we all switched to the more premium offering of liquid stock in cartons.
As many of you know I need to avoid onions and garlic and this stock cube came up on one of the instagram feeds I follow.
I tried them in a chicken soup I was making and I am sold. They taste amazing - not too salty - and are full of flavour. And so cheap!
Massel Gluten Free Chicken Stock Cubes (garlic and onion free) $1.39 for 7 cubes (7 cups of stock)
Southern ocean sea salt
This is salt, gathered from around us, in the Southern Ocean
This is corn derived maltodextrin which is a flavourless additive.
Not a lot in here - in fact 0.45g per cup of stock
Natural vegetable flavours
Nice to see natural vegetable flavours in here.
This will be in here to give the stock and umami or meaty flavour.
Nice to know what oil is in here
Extra virgin olive oil
This will be in here for the colouring.
A note: if you really want an onion flavour in your food a good alternative is Asafoetida which is a powder you will find anywhere that stocks ingredients for Indian cuisine. It smells very like sulphur but don’t let that put you off. Just a pinch can add so much flavour to your cooking.
