Most New Zealanders need to seriously rethink their diet and lifestyle in order to live longer, says a Kiwi health researcher.

Jason Shon Bennett, a health guru and bestselling author, says he “cured himself” at age 25 by ditching alcohol, rejigging his diet, and doing intermittent fasting.

“There was no one teaching me, I had to figure it all out myself,” he told RadioLIVE.

His advice relies on the lifestyle habits of centenarians around the world, including Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy and the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and their habits.

Mr Bennett’s philosophy emphasises a whole food, plant-based diet with limited alcohol – features he selected from the diets from cultures boasting longevity.

Home & Garden co-host Helen Jackson points out that most whole, plant-based meals can’t be whipped up in under five minutes.

Mr Bennett agrees, remarking that preparation is key.

“Golden rule number one is be prepared and control your environment.”

After getting his clients on a plant-based diet, he recommends people follow the classic 80/20 rule, where you eat well and follow the rules around 80 percent of the time.

The health guru’s best advice and philosophy is outlined in his new book Feel Great & Live Longer: A New Zealand handbook for exceptional health.
