Mum catches son stealing, calls police

A Christchurch mother who called police on her son after finding stolen items in her home is being praised for her actions.

After asking her 14-year-old son where the items came from, the mother dobbed him in when he refused to answer.

Police found a bike, scooter and shoes at the home, which are believed to have been stolen from properties in the suburbs of Wigram and Hornby.

The 14-year-old will now be charged with burglary.

Natasha, the teen’s mother, told RadioLIVE Drive it was a hard choice to make calling police on her son.

“That was probably one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make,” she says.

I have no other choice than to report what he’s doing.

But Natasha says, unfortunately, her son’s behaviour has worsened since calling police.

She told RadioLIVE she fears that he will hurt other people, or himself.

“For my son to continuously threaten the other kids and my husband makes it really [scaring] for me.”

Police are urging residents to call police and report any missing items from their homes.

Parents whose teenagers return home with items that don't belong to them are also urged to call police.
