President Donald Trump has caused an international outcry after asking his officials why the US are taking so many people from “s**thole countries”.
The remark was reportedly in reference to people from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries. The White House did not deny the comment which has been confirmed by US media.
Professor Robert Patman, Otago University international relations expert, spoke to Lloyd Burr on Summer Drive.
Mr Patman said it was “a disappointing, but not surprising, statement from Mr Trump”.
He says it’s hard to see how the US can sustain a leading position diplomatically if this “intemperate language” is continually used.
