Grant and John chat with Nick Jones from Hauraki Express Charters. Nick's been catching up to 40 kingfish per day in the Hauraki Gulf, the biggest pushing 20kgs.
You need good gear to catch good fish, so John and Grant catch up with Scott Malcon, Fishing Manager at Daiwa New Zealand to talk the latest LT (Light, Tough) reels from Daiwa. These feature a raft of new technology and also incorporate features, such as Magseal, that was until recently only found in top-of-the-range Daiwa reels.
John and Grant cross to West Island where Terry Williams-King has some thoughts about the impact of a recent escape of 20,000 farmed kingfish at Port Stephens on the southern New South Wales coast.
The escape has seen “ravenous” kingfish dispersing up and down the coast, including Port Stephens Marine Park, which has some commentators worried about the damage they could cause to resident sea life in the park.
Grant and John talk to Warren Hay from Warren Hay Marine in Whangarei, who reports spectacular inshore fishing on the east coast and some great game fishing on the west coast.
