The PGG Wrightson Livestock National Video Sale is the premier sale of beef genetics in NZ, bringing together the best Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn bulls from around the country.
Every year leading into winter, hundreds of bull breeders around the country conduct on-farm bull sales.
This year the pinnacle event that was once part of the annual Beef Expo has moved to a ‘video only’ sale - something many countries around the world have adopted.
Callum Stewart, national genetics manager for PGG Wrightson, told Rural Exchange that buyers can bid on the best bulls in the country without the stress of the animals coming through a ring.
Rural Exchange co-host Sarah Perriam is heavily involved in the filming and production process.
“It’s all credit to her. All we do is supply the animals and she does all the work,” Mr Stewart said.
He had some advice for those sceptical of moving to video sales.
“It is the art of selling to a crowd. Most buyers have made their decision before they’ve stepped into the ring,” he said. “All we’re doing is stepping it up to video – you’re viewing the bull in the paddock, go to the video and you’re in a comfortable situation.”
