Leasing vineyards 'a better succession plan'

The harvest across New Zealand is well underway and the positivity in the viticulture sector is at record highs as demand for our wine grows internationally.

Options to buy more land are becoming increasingly capital-hungry as vineyard prices can be around $300,000 per hectare.

There's a surge in smaller blocks and planting vines, leasing them out to larger label vineyards.

Bayleys Marlborough agent, Mike Poff has been involved in the viticulture sector for decades and is working to encourage more formal lease arrangements.

He's urging people not to stress about managing their vineyard properties when they want to retire or do other things.
