When 26-year old Filipina transgender woman, Jennifer Laude, is found dead in a motel room, the perpetrator is quickly identified as U.S. marine Joseph Scott Pemberton.
PJ Raval, director of Call Her Ganda talks with Mark Sainsbury ahead of his film playing at the Doc Edge fest in Auckland.
Mr Raval says as well as a story about transgender woman and woman alike, it also explores the relationship between the Philippines and the US.
The protagonists are quite different in this movie, with a lot of transgender groups using social media to spread the word and raise awareness about the film.
“It really is a story about trans woman taking on the US government.”
