The grass is no longer greener for Kiwis across the Tasman

Morning Talk 09/02/2018

Australia’s foreign minister Julie Bishop is set to meet with her Kiwi counterpart Winston Peters today amid concerns about the erosion of New Zealanders long-held rights and benefits on the other side of the Tasman.

And while New Zealanders can hope for better rights for Kiwis in Australia, it’s no longer the Promised Land in the collective eyes that it once was.

Tim Gassin is co-chairman of Oz Kiwi and a long-time campaigner for the rights of New Zealand citizens who call Australia ‘home’. Mr Gassin joined Mark Sainsbury on Morning talk to discuss his fight for Kiwis across the Tasman.

It’s certainly an uphill battle trying to deal with this.
“Australia is a country that prides itself as a democracy, an inclusive multi-cultural nation,” he said. “Australia is gonna have to sort this out at some point.”

Mr Gassin’s organisation is calling on Australia to provide New Zealanders in Australia a fair pathway to citizenship and equitable access to government services.

“There are some limits to what we can achieve with the current Government in Australia,” he told RadioLIVE.
