President Robert Mugabe was widely expected to resign this morning (NZ Time) but instead gave a rambling address in which his next political move was unclear.

Mark Sainsbury is joined by Jean Jacques Cornish, Africa correspondent at Eyewitness News to explain the situation.

President Mugabe, who is nearly 94 years-old, has been given until 11pm tonight to resign or he will face impeachment proceedings.

"We know what’s going to happen, we just don’t know how long it will take."

He's run out of friends, he's run out of allies, he's run out of time.

Mr Cornish says "Any hope Mugabe had of a dignified exit is gone."
