Labour is promising to put 1800 new police officers on the streets over the next 3 years.
New Police Minister Stuart Nash joins the AM show to discuss Labour's police pledge.
There are currently 10,000 officers on the New Zealand force but Mr Nash says "There have not been new police on the beat since 2008-2009."
Police have been consistently under resourced for about 9 years
Mr Nash says the new officers will be distributed geographically but also used to strengthen specialist teams such as the cyber crime unit.
The AM Show with Duncan Garner, Amanda Gillies and Mark Richardson, weekdays 6-9am on RadioLIVE and streaming live to the ROVA app on Android and iPhone.
