'We need fewer cows, it’s that simple'

Are farmers doing enough to keep our rivers swimmable? Senior Ecology Lecturer at Massey University Dr Mike Joy doesn’t lay the fault with farmers but a broken system.

I don’t blame the farmers. They are just doing what they have to do. It’s the lack of leadership and the system that we have.

Duncan asked Dr Mike Joy what is one thing we could do?

We need less cows, it’s that simple.

He argues if we could get the cow population per hectare down to natural levels, like we had three or four decades ago everything would be fine.

At the top of this story Duncan played a clip with Northland farmer Andrew Booth. The full video can be found on the NZ Farming Facebook page.
