ANAND HIRA: Something must be done before someone dies

22/03/2017
Feels like the record player is broken at the moment.

Another week, another dairy robbery. Yet again, young people roaming in packs.

Dairy owners are once again considering arming themselves. And again, everyone says they understand the frustration - but they should not take the law into their own hands.

Again, people point out that there are not enough Police. Again, politicians will talk about training more Officers, and again they make it a political issue.

Again, some offenders will be caught, and as Winston Peters perfectly summed up (like he often does), it's catch and release. Thieves are again on the streets.

Every time these criminals are caught we have a new opportunity to send a message. Not in our country, in our country we expect better. And like clockwork we choose not to send that message. These kids believe there is no real consequence for their actions. And until they believe its not worth the risk, they won't stop.

People say this behaviour is just a symptom or a larger issue, and we must focus on that cause. I don't disagree. But how does that help the public at risk now?

We have to manage the symptom too or this will escalate. Someone will die if our leaders don't act.
