Kaikoura celebrates SH1 re-opening
Kaikoura celebrated this morning as the town’s main road re-opened. State Highway 1 (SH1) is now up and running, more than a year after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the seaside town.
Mayor Winston Gray joins Wendyl Nissen on The Long Lunch as the first cruise ship of the season is due in town.
The coastal highway link between Picton and Christchurch was badly damaged during the November 2016 quake.
Mr Gray explains that the road is currently open from 7am to 8pm, and there’s still work to be done to get the road back to what it used to be.
“We will still be at work 12 months’ time,” he says. “But the road will be open.”
