NIWA says it’s a marine heat wave
With crazy water temperatures across New Zealand at the moment (over 24 degrees in some places!), we’d thought we get a weather expert on the show for a yarn.
Ben Noll, NIWA Meteorologist, talks about how this La Niña cycle is similar to the past but this year it’s been cranked right up - possibly because of global warming.
As a point of balance, last year at this time we were experiencing lower than average temperatures and the water was pretty cold, but that aside Ben says this is pretty unusual.
What is of greater concern perhaps is when you look back at previous early summer settled and warm weather cycles, it provides the perfect conditions for late summertime cyclones.
Have a listen back and enjoy the great weather!
