What is wrong with this picture?
This seems innocent enough right? Cruise ship leaves port and celebrates by releasing hundreds of balloons into the air. but where do those balloons go? That is the concern of Project Jonah New Zealand. They say sea life is put at great risk with this simple action.
Balloons are extremely harmful to the environment and the animals living within them. Marine animals such as sea turtles, whales, dolphins and sea birds often mistake a deflated balloon for food. The balloons, once swallowed, can block the intestinal tract or accumulate within the animals stomach, leading to starvation and death. Animals can also become entangled in balloon strings restricting their ability to move or causing permanent injury.
Even balloons that claim they are biodegradable still often take years to break down, and they may release chemicals into the environment as they do.
