Police are investigating after a four-month-old girl from Howick, Auckland, suffered "significant" multiple fractures to her body.

Middlemore Hospital staff found 16 fractures to her skull, ribs, and limbs, and police described the injuries as non-accidental.

Children's Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft joined Trudi Nelson on Your Sunday to discuss these horrific cases of child abuse that continue to occur.

Judge Becroft slammed the family involved after they've closed ranks, calling it irresponsible, gutless and cowardly.

"For the sake of our children, we need to report all instances of abuse," he said.

The cause of physical abuse in families can often be caused by toxic stress, Judge Becroft said.

While he stressed that this is no excuse, he believes better support needs to be provided to parents and communities.

The most important message for Judge Becroft is that "a child is one of our greatest human responsibilities."

"The continuing message has to be that there is zero tolerance for abuse of children."
