Southland farmer to take on trade talks

Rural Exchange 22/04/2018

The fall out from Brexit continues to impact our red meat sector here in New Zealand, with our lines into the European and UK markets appearing shaky.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association have appointed Southland sheep and beef farmer and agri-political figure Jeff Grant to help maintain these connections

Mr Grant will work closely with B+LNZ’s Europe representative and the New Zealand Government to help safeguard New Zealand’s exports to the key market.

When asked about how he came into the role, Mr Grant said he turned the offer down at first.

He changed his mind after considering just how critical it is to maintain our access to these markets, saying "this is a major issue for the industry."

The UK government have indicated their preference is to enter into a free trade agreement once Brexit negotiations wrap up in early 2019.
