This year's FMG New Zealand Young Farmer regional contests kicked off in Wellington on Saturday.
The Taranaki/Manawatu title went to 26-year-old Fielding lad, Will Taylor. He joined Rural Exchange to talk about his win.
He says the night went "better than expected".
I definitely wasn't expecting to hear my name called out last night, that's for sure.
"It was a really big day, and there was a lot of things that didn't go my way, but it turns out they actually did," Mr Taylor said.
Mr Taylor explained to Rural Exchange the contestants had to go through eight different modules.
"Including; a 20-minute interview, there was some pretty standard stuff like using STIHL chainsaws and Honda motorbikes.
"We also had a couple of dairy-based modules around water quality, Ravensdown fertiliser products and also some FMG Insurance and health and safety on the farm," Mr Taylor said.
The 50th FMG New Zealand Young Farmer grand final will be held in Invercargill in July.
