The Strand Vet’s Justine Alley says it's important to get your dogs vaccinated against the canine killer parvovirus .

"It is a virus that is always around"

Justine Alley says a recent outbreak in Otago has prompted us to have the discussion today.

"The problem with parvo is that it lives in the environment for up to six months which makes it hard to prevent."

Two years ago dog owners were warned of a highly contagious and potentially lethal canine virus.

The immune system gets really knocked and they can pick up secondary infections really easily

Kapiti Coast District Council closed its animal shelter in 2016 as a precaution, after it confirmed two cases of parvovirus.
