Kiwi actor and director Taika Waititi has made headlines around the world today after an interview he did with UK magazine Dazed and Confused where he said New Zealand is ‘racist as f***”
"I think New Zealand is the best place on the planet, but it's a racist place. People just flat-out refuse to pronounce Maori names properly." Waititi said.
Waititi added that people in Auckland in particular are "very patronising" for praising how well he has done "for one of his people".
"There's still profiling when it comes to Polynesians. It's not even a colour thing - like, 'Oh, there's a black person.' It's, 'If you're Poly then you're getting profiled.'"
So, is he right? Are there people in New Zealand who refuse to pronounce Maori correctly and is that racist?
Former Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox and John Tamahere, CEO of Waipareira Trust, joined Ryan Bridge on RadioLIVE Drive to discuss.
