Former Defence Minister Mark Mitchell has today announced his candidacy for the National Party leadership.
So far four party members have thrown their hat into the ring, with Mr Mitchell by far the least known.
- Collins 'confident and happy' she's got enough support for National leadership
- Simon Bridges: 'I have the right mix of generational change and experience'
He told Stephen McIvor on RadioLIVE Drive that his 20 years experience in public service shows he has the leadership skills necessary to take on the job.
When asked about the possibility of settling for the deputy role, Mr Mitchell said that's not his focus.
I'm fully focused on earning and winning the support of my colleagues.
As for his lack of profile, Mr Mitchell said that those who have have worked with him in the past will vouch for his ability to bring out the best in those around him.
He also believes that he can be Prime Minister come 2020, "when I look in the mirror, I see a man who is deeply passionate about his country [...] we've done extremely well, but we can do a lot better" he said.
