Cameras on vessels 'vital' to curb illegal dumping
There is calls from the fishing industry to have cameras on vessels removed.
Dave Turner Fisheries Management at the Ministry for Primary Industries has said "We estimate that if we found the golden bullet to stop discarding, we would probably put over half of the inshore fleet out of business overnight..."
Recreational fishing group LegaSea has said this statement alone is reason to leave cameras on ships and is calling for Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash to hold firm.
LegaSea spokesperson Scott Macindoe says the industry is corrupt and am official inquiry from government is needed.
