Almost $1b worth of food wasted in NZ every year
New Zealanders throw away 122,547 tonnes of food a year.
That is enough food to feed the entire population of Dunedin for two years and is worth $872-million. Just thrown in the bin and left to rot in a landfill.
Climate campaigners say rotting food has a huge part to play in climate change due to methane gas released.
Jenny Marshall from Love Food, Hate Waste joined Ali Mau on RadioLIVE Drive to talk about what people can do to help reduce their food waste.
If food waste was a country it would be the third highest contributor to climate change behind China and the USA.
