What does it truly mean for South Africa to host the World Cup in terms of costs and the social impact on the country.
Co-producer Gary Baddeley of Who Really Wins says the global event has really put South Africa on the
map, but it’s also left the nation with “a huge bill to pay afterwards.”
Millions of citizens are in poverty, their government really can’t afford all the money they’ve spent on building new stadiums just for the World Cup.
Baddeley says the only real winners are FIFA, who’ll make billions in revenue, none of which will go to South Africa.
Once the soccer tournament skips town, the giant stadiums — which have forced entire
communities and schools to relocate — won’t be of much use.
