Work in Christchurch: Far from normal?

Road line

Do you think the disaster in Christchurch could be a silver-lining as far as people finding jobs is concerned?

Tradesmen are arriving from all over the country and their services are in demand. The huge backlog of work that is required in the city has certainly placed the recession on hold for builders, glaziers and electricians, but is it the answer for work-related woes?

In other areas of work, Prime Minister John Key has asked that businesses continue to pay employees, even if they are not working. Is this a realistic request? What other options exist for workers not able to work, but who need money?

Why isn't the billion dollar bail out of failed investors causing more upset around the nation? Surely that money would be better spent rebuilding Christchurch and helping people in genuine need. How come the govt can find money instantly for such a thing when they cannot get money for tertiary education and so many other services which New Zealanders hold dear?

@ By Whakatane Home Page-An large part of the clean up is done really if your talking about the mud which locals + students and helping to do, the demolition crews clean up there own mess with digger etc, Im sure the roading crews wouldn't need them talking their jobs either. Its not like the great depression where you are doing it all by hand the situation for 90% of the town is repairing the buildings that have been damaged. Sorry about your olds, its rough out there I just dont think having a unwilling/unskilled work force is what we need at the moment. Also Cane your are a Moron, its the second biggest city in NZ,Most of it isn't built on sand, Wellington is built on a fault line and Auckland is Surrounded by Active/inactive volcano's so we shouldn't build any more building's in either as well by your logic?.

@By Mark I hear you mark...BUT there will be work for clean up and for the unemployed in ch-ch this would suit them. as for sending the rest down there are skilled people around that cant get jobs,But you are right but later on maybe. I just hate to see my home town in the crap my parents are in a bad way and all i can do is phone them to hear mum cry, That hurts and drives me crazy that I cant help yet. Hope you understand.

@By Whakatane Home Page.. Why do we want your unskilled/ unemployed down here it not like most of them are skilled in building or want to work in the first place the last thing we need is a bunch of unskilled unwilling work force sucking already stretched resources dry. Trades men and skilled people within the construction industry is what we need.

Is it a wise move to rebuild? Its the only city built below sea level the very foundation is sand? Given that the safety for iwi to live there will alway's be at high risk of eviromental disaters...

Our heart goes out to the people of Christchurch and the surronding communities in this time of horrible loss. We are Americans that have visited beautiful Christchurch several time over the past years. It is sad to see the devestation and the lives of so many people being effected. One thing for sure is that the hardy New Zealanders will rebuild Christchurch and the effected communites to an even better community than it was before the quake. Great City, Great People. Our prayers are with all of you for a full and rapid recovery.
