Ewing Stevens, RadioLIVE's Monday to Wednesday host of the All Nighter, joined Radio Pacific as a talkback host at the foundation of the station in 1979. Ewing had been involved in broadcasting for 55 years in 2011.
His first broadcasting experience was in 1956 with 4XD Dunedin.
While serving as a minister of the Wakari Union Parish, in 1972, he was invited to broadcast with 4XO in those pioneering days of current affairs talkback.But also broadcast occasionally on the National network and with 4ZB in Dunedin.
Ewing was awarded the M.B.E. for his work with youth in Dunedin in 1972 and he served as a Manukau City Councillor for twelve years, between 1986 and 1998.
Ewing as an author has had 22 books published to date. Titles include Striking Rock Bottom, Sermons on the Apostles' Creed, Sunday Alive, Who Was Jesus and a series of children's photo essays, Jillian goes to School, Fiona Goes to Hospital, Carolyn's Mother has a Baby and Tam Goes Fishing in New Zealand.
During his years as a talk-back host for 32 years with Radio Pacific and Radio Live Ewing has had the following books published: Phone People 1-7 of Recipes, Remedies and Rhymes: Phone People V111 " The Best of the Remedies"; Phone People 1X " The best of the Recipes": Phone People X " Handy Hints and Quotable Quotes".
Also "One Man's Journey", "A Likeable Rogue" and "Better than Boot Camp". Phone People Books 8,and 10 and "Better than Boot Camp" are still in print and are available through the distributors on free phone 0800 459459.
Ewing is married to Annette with four grown up children.
They have two granddaughters Jana and Sienna and a Grandson, Billy.
Ewing and Annette now live in Onetangi on Waiheke Island. He travels each night by ferry to join his audience on air from Midnight to Dawn and returns on the early ferry after his shift to his paradisical island home.
From time to time Ewing visits his property in Central Otago which grows Pinot Noir grapes and on those occasions he broadcasts from RadioLIVE's Alexandra studio.
Ewing is joined by Jason Beaumont who is part of the show and is the first person you talk to when you call the show.
Ewing Stevens was nominated as a semi finalist in the New Zealander Of The Year 2011 in the category of local hero, it was an honour for Ewing to be nominated for this award and even though Ewing did not win he was moved by the nomination and the listeners who nominated him.
