Gran gives burglars the bird

A Chinese grandmother has beaten the burglars who were making her life a misery - by turning her flat into a giant birdcage.

Ling Wan, 80 - who's been burgled eight times in six months - sealed up her stairs and built an iron cage around her apartment in Changsha, southern China. Now the only way in and out is up and down a ladder locked on Wan's balcony.

"All she needs is a giant bell and she's all set," laughed one neighbour.

Wan says: "People said I should move somewhere safer. They can mock but it is very effective. I haven't had one burglary since I built it."
