I am a post graduate student, with a student loan. I have every intention of paying every cent of my loan back on graduating. However, there is something I would like to point out.Degrees are being devalued. Meaning that many people with good degrees are unable to actually get employment. I have a first class honours degree, and was awarded the top student award at my university, yet I found it near impossible to get a job because I was either over qualified, or didn't have enough experience. Hence I am now studying for my Masters so that I can become a teacher instead. It infuriates me that people go to Varsity, get a low grade degree, and still manage to get jobs, whilst those who work harder end up struggling.Degrees should be for people who want to put the work in, not just receive a free ride, which seems to be the way these days.I watched other students on my course, spend night after night, drunk and partying, achieving a 2nd or 3rd class degree, and going out into the work place, when they could have achieved similar qualifications with a vocational college course that cost a fraction of the cost that a Varsity course costs.Perhaps I am wrong, but I think there should be a more stringent method of selecting students for degree courses. At the moment, Universities are experiencing cost-cutting due to the current economic climate, so could very well end up more obliged to accept these type of student just to gain revenue, meaning that potentially there is more risk for fewer people paying student loans back anyway.Sorry, it is just a thought.Warm regardsEmily
