Rodney Hide's latest raid on our democracy is the most chilling yet. First he eliminated fair representation under New Zealand's oldest treaty obligations, now he wants to sell off our water assets.
The problem for all of us is that Act is wielding national power, but hardly registers any national support as a political party. It got into power on the back of some pretty dodgy National Party manipulations, one of which was the all out assault on New Zealand First through its mainstream media mates, and the other was not showing up for the election in Epsom.
So it is no surprise that National in government is letting Rodney do what the hell he likes, and what he likes is to line up lots of high profit opportunities for his rich mates. Top of Rodney's wish list was Auckland with all its infrastructure assets, but first he had to get rid of those troublesome Maori who seem to think they have some claim on the place.
Now it's water, which in most advanced societies is considered to be a public, not a private asset. As experience in Britain shows, privatisation of water supply is a recipe for disaster, for reduced water quality, extra public health risk, and high priced cost of living basics. Just as well National has decided to wipe out the Kiwi worker's smoko, because Rodney is about to make the water for his cuppa too damned expensive.
Hide's arrogance is obvious when you see his reaction to use public money to fund a free trip for his current floosie. Was he chastened? Was he heck. Like his lord and master Sir Roger Douglas, filching public funds for his private benefit is what Rodney Hide calls his entitlement. At least the free dirty week or with his squashette does clarify what Rodney means by Free Market. He means – free for me because you pay.
If we give in to this little fascist's water grab, next we will be paying for the air we breath. It is one thing to drink bottled water when you are trying to impress your fancy farming friends, but quite another to pay some foreign banker for the right to drink from your own natural resource.
