'Three strikes and you're out'

Just some thoughts on the 'three strikes and you're out' proposed law change. Firstly Hide says it will be a deterrent. I would be surprised. I don’t think the criminal mind works like that and overseas examples have not supported that rationale. Fair enough, though, there does seem to be some appetite for getting tough on law and order.

What really troubles me is Rodney Hide. Is it just me or do others struggle with him as a credible figure these days?

Once the perk buster was found to be gallivanting around the world with his partner, in my mind, he completely lost his moral mandate to talk about right and wrong and improving society. To me, the guy who sold himself as a man of principle now appears to be passing time until he is rightfully sent into oblivion. So to see him going on about law and order and building a better society to me seems laughable.

Rodney – get a room!

Totally agree, the best contribution Rodney could make is by putting travel rorts on the 3 strikes list, that would be a positive contribution to society.
Nothing wrong with considered punishment to a complex issue, but judge each case on the facts and look at the overseas lessons, the safest societies are those that do not rely solely on punishment, ie scandanavian countries a third of our imprisonment. Look at the sucess of justice reinvestment in Texas when the prison system bankrupted them. In comparision look at California, crime going through the roof, bankrupt, highest and most violent reoffending at 705. Me I vote for commonsense, not the ignorance of Garret and co.
