The Ocean, In light of Owenga tragedy - Video

Fri, 11 May 2012 09:42
My Dad Bill Hopkins and his business partner, Happy Yovich had the 8 Owenga boats built in Whangarei, he sailed them to the Chathams, and back. They crayfished the Chathams for years hauling massive tonnage of cray, stability was not an issue! Check this video which shows the power of the ocean, if you have not stacked your boat wisely you will pay!

I agree. Those 8 Owenga boats and several others of the same design fished the Chatham and all round NZ. They were well regarded sea boats. Yes some of them sank but so have a lot of other boats. It comes down to common sense really. Load your boat and use it in the manner that it was designed to be loaded and used. Unfortunately, common sense has become a thing of the past. We are taught to go by a specific written set of rules these days. If the rule book says that its ok to stack 5 tonne on a boat, then 5 tonne gets stacked on with no regard to whether its above or below decks or on the roof of the wheelhouse for that matter.
