Inflation. http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/keygraphs/Fig1b.html As far as I know in the 70's before 80's liberalised international trade NZ had something similar to trade protection,(and NZ had even much more generous welfare than now and possibly higher tax,the increase wage from union could be much faster than now I bet) and NZ had a longer and higher inflation climax than even (the inflation climax peaked at about 1981 then eased). There is a very strong correlation between the presence of Labour admin and the high inflation. Capital Gain Tax.
