Should we be repealing the foreshore and seabed act?

Is it necessary for the foreshore and seabed act to be repealed? Prime Minister John Key has said he thinks an "elegant" solution can be found, but he has warned Maori not to expect too much. Maori Party MP Hone Harawira stated three conditions that would be attached to the crown's return of the foreshore and seabed to Maori: "One, Maori title of the foreshore and seabed; Two, in case anyone is scared we will sell it, make it (title) inalieanable; Three, full access to all New Zealanders forever." What do you feel will be the likely outcome of the repeal?

Steven, have you ever studied NZ's history? You speak like an ignorant person. So I assume that your understanding of NZ history is the sanitised version regurgitated by the bumbling NZ media.

Ownership of the forshore and sea bed is greed, racist greed by maori, the same type of racist greed shown by the crown that signed a treaty consigning all kiwis to a never ending spiral of further greed.

Ian, are you unable to read? I explained the issue previously. The judiciary decided that Maori were entitled to seek "customary title" over areas of New Zealand's foreshore and seabed, the govt overruled the judiciary. Any govt that attempts to overrule the judiciary should be dismissed. Are you simply to stupid to comprehend my posts?

The Foreshore and seabed belong to ALL New Zealanders, and must never be signed over to Maori, or any other minority group, no matter what delusions of importance they may think they have.

There sould be NO foreshore and seabed act full stop!

Maori do not own this, all who reside in NZ own it!

Diana, the foreshore and seabed act was a disgrace. The reason why is simple, the govt created a law to stop a decision by the judiciary. The govt should not be interfering with the judiciary. The foreshore and seabed controversy was sparked when, on the 19th of June 2003, New Zealand's Court of Appeal ruled, in the Ngati Apa decision, that Maori were entitled to seek "customary title" over areas of New Zealand's foreshore and seabed in the Maori Land Court. The law, was the worst act passed by the previous govt.

How bizarre that decendents of 1840 Maori are demanding exclusive rights to a universal phenomenon. The law of basic human rights will never grant exclusive rights to a group of descendents from any population group to own naturally occuring oceanographic/geographic infrastructure. Just as bizarre to think that a certain population group would demand exlusive rights to the rays of the sun between dawn and dusk!

What decendents of 1840 Maori do have however, is a right to have equal partnership of kawangatanga of the land with descendents of all other population groups; this IS guaranteed under existing foreshore and seabed legislation.

This legislation protects everyone's birth right to share and enjoy the most basic of our natural environments; and guarantees those of our future generations.

If they get foreshore & seabed, you can kiss goodbye to all the wild paua, kina, pipi etc,we might get a taste of the odd farmed one, or down the pub for 10 times the price.

Let the Chattham Islanders speak for themselves, as an outsider who is entitled to speak for another. The Moriori were a peacefull people, their is a time for peace and a time for violence. And a peacefull people would not fear to well under British colonialism, take Australia for instance. Maori did not invade the Chattham islands until after the British claimed them for themselves, perhaps Maori did not want the British to develop a easy mind frame about them. The following extract is also stated-Some Moriori descendants have made claims against the New Zealand government through the Waitangi Tribunal, a commission of inquiry charged with making recommendations on claims brought by Maori relating to actions or omissions of the Crown. How does it feel when the shoe is on the other foot, lets see if one can walk a mile or 200 years.
